TENNIS LESSONS DURING COVID-19

Please review the following information pertaining to private and semi-private lessons during KTC's phase I and II operations in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. The end-date of phase II operations is to be determined, based on Province of Manitoba and Tennis Manitoba guidelines. We will continue to update as information becomes available.

NOT PERMITTED DURING PHASE II:

  • Beginner/refresher group clinics

  • Group lessons for 3-4 people

  • Department lessons

  • Junior lessons

  • Social events

REQUIREMENTS, SAFETY MEASURES, AND PROTOCOLS:

Coaching will not be permitted if the coach and/or student meet any of the following criteria:

  • You are sick (even a little under the weather)

  • Have any symptoms of the coronavirus

  • Have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days.

  • Are a vulnerable individual

Be aware that although restrictions are eased, safety precautions must remain in place until there is a universal vaccine or effective treatment for the coronavirus.

IF PRO FEELS THE SOCIAL DISTANCING CANNOT BE MAINTAINED THAN THE PRO CAN REFUSE

BOOKING AND PERFORMING OR COMPLETING THE LESSON

BEFORE A LESSON:

COORDINATING A LESSON:

  • For a private lesson: Coordinate a day and time with a recognized Pro. The pro will make the booking online.

  • For a semi-private lesson (2 individuals): Coordinate with another player first, then coordinate a day and time with a recognized Pro. The pro will make the booking online.

  • For a group lesson (3-4 players): Coordinate with other players first, then coordinate a day and time with a recognized Pro. The pro will make the booking online. (This protocol is only when doubles play is allowed)

  • Names on the booking MUST be accurate in case it is needed for COVID positive for contact tracing

  • All other booking rules are to be followed according to phase 1 parameters

  • Students cannot do a lesson and play immediately before/ after for fairness to others (no back to back)

BEFORE THE START OF A LESSON:

  • Student(s)/coach should come to facility no more than 5-10 minutes before the time expected to play.

  • Do not congregate in the parking area.

  • Each student must have a can or 2 of marked balls if serving will be part of the lesson (marked with your initials or other recognizable feature)

  • Try to restrict balls to a particular group, court or day of the week. One idea is to label them with a permanent marker.

  • Wherever possible, teaching pros should have their own marked hoppers and teaching carts to avoid sharing with other pros.

  • Student(s)/coach must have 2 towels (1 for placing on a chair to sit and 1 for wiping sweat off)

  • Student(s)/coach should bring enough water with them for proper hydration (no water refills available on-site)

  • Having a parent/guardian present at the facility with juniors under age 18 is highly recommended. When that is not feasible, the parent/guardian must provide written permission for each junior participating in a coaching session and/or when playing with other juniors or adult members.

  • Physical distancing requirements (minimum of 6 feet apart) plus not to touch anything on and around the courts besides their own belongings, this includes the nets, entry door, netting, fencing, etc.

  • Wash or sanitize your hands

  • If available, step on the sanitization tray prior to going on the court

  • Do not touch the railings on the stairs

  • Group coaching should take place only where full social distancing is possible. Group coaching should be limited to small groups. An exception would be where all participants are family members or are otherwise in one home.

  • Practice caution with the tennis balls and avoid letting the participants touch them. Although there is no specific evidence that tennis balls can spread COVID-19, we know that contamination by respiratory droplets from an infected person can potentially survive on hard surfaces up to three days.

DURING A LESSON:

DISTANCING MEASURES FOR STUDENTS AND COACHES:

  • Try to stay at least six feet apart from the other player. Do not make physical contact with them.

  • Don’t change ends of the court

  • No racket sharing

  • No high fives

  • When taking a break stay apart from the other player(s)

CONTACT MEASURES FOR STUDENT(S) AND COACH:

  • Avoid touching your face after handling a ball, racquet or other equipment.

  • Wash your hands promptly if you have touched your eyes, nose or mouth.

  • Do not use water fountains or use them to refill water bottles

  • Use your racquet/foot to pick up balls coming from another court. Don’t use your hands to pick up.

  • Limit the use of coaching equipment such as target cones.

  • Don’t let the players handle any coaching equipment. The coach should pick up the balls.

  • Using ball tubes and basket pickups to pick up loose balls also limits contact.

RUNNING THE LESSON:

  • Do all distancing measures from above

  • Live ball drills and game-based play is recommended over using baskets.

  • Position the players at well-spaced stations.

  • Tennis equipment should be touched only by the pro/coach and should be cleaned frequently.

  • For lessons with serving, students are to bring two cans of balls that only they handle for serving.

  • Avoid using unnecessary equipment such as throw-down lines.

  • Encourage players to use their racquet/foot to push balls back and/or hit them to their coach to avoid using hands and touching the balls.

AFTER A LESSON:

DISTANCING PROTOCOLS:

  • Do not shake hands or high five.

  • Be mindful to take all equipment, towels, water bottle, etc. with you

  • Take all your garbage (if any) to the one large receptacle off the court and place inside without touching

  • If available, step on the sanitization tray prior to leaving the court

  • Wash your hands thoroughly or use a hand sanitizer after coming off the court.

  • Do not use the locker room, washroom, or changing area.

  • No social activity or gatherings should take place.

  • All players should leave the facility immediately after play. Do not congregate in the parking area.

  • Go home and stretch!

CLEANLINESS MEASURES FOR EQUIPMENT:

  • Consider spraying tennis balls briefly with a disinfectant spray

  • Consider spraying cones, lines and other equipment with a disinfectant spray

  • Use alcohol based disinfectant to clean all tennis gear, including racquets, towels, target cones, ball machines, etc.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS FOR AFTER THE LESSON:

  • Teaching professionals should try to be assigned specific courts—and possibly specific days and times.

  • Replace all balls if someone suspected to have COVID-19 comes in contact with them.

  • Using new balls on a very regular basis is highly encouraged.
